Cyber Security in Schools is Changing

Cyber Security In Schools Has Changed - The Standards Have Changed With It.

Cyber security incidents are now a routine risk for schools. As the Department for Education updates its Cyber Security Standards, schools are being asked to move beyond basic protection and demonstrate that their security is resilient, monitored and fit for today’s threat landscape.

Cyber incidents are now a fact of school life

Government research shows that cyber incidents affect a significant proportion of schools.

According to the Cyber Security Breaches Survey, in the last year alone, 44% of primary schools and 60% of secondary schools reported experiencing a cyber security breach or attack. Schools are now among the most frequently targeted sectors in the UK, with phishing, malware and service disruption occurring during normal school operations, not just as isolated events.

The DfE recognises that cyber incidents can have serious consequences, including disruption to learning, safeguarding risks, data compromise and, in some cases, school closure. This is why cyber security has been elevated to one of the DfE’s core digital standards, expected to be met by all schools by 2030.

The question is no longer whether your school will face cyber threats, but whether your security is strong enough to withstand them.

On‑site security hardware was built for a different era

Many schools still rely on on‑site security appliances installed years ago, often with limited visibility, manual updates and no out‑of‑hours monitoring.

School networks have fundamentally changed, however. Cloud platforms, remote access, shared devices and third‑party services now sit at the heart of day‑to‑day teaching and administration. This expanded attack surface places far greater demands on security than traditional on‑premise hardware was ever designed to handle.

The updated DfE Cyber Security Standards do not focus on what equipment a school owns. Instead, they emphasise outcomes: security that is always on, regularly updated, actively monitored, and able to respond quickly when incidents occur.

Where protection depends on a single device in a school building, and local capacity to manage it, those outcomes become harder to guarantee.

The DfE standards are shifting from ownership to assurance

Recent updates to the DfE Cyber Security Standards make it clear that cyber security is a leadership responsibility, not just an IT task. Schools are expected to understand their cyber risk, review it regularly and be confident that protections remain effective over time.

As part of the government’s wider work to narrow the digital divide, the DfE has acknowledged that legacy systems, resilience and sustainability are key challenges for schools. The direction of travel is clear however: security needs to be robust, centrally managed and proportionate, without placing additional burden on school staff.

This is where the Schools Broadband cloud‑delivered security model aligns naturally with the standards, providing resilience, continuous monitoring and clearer assurance for senior leaders.

How Schools Broadband can help

Schools Broadband works with schools every day to help them meet, and maintain, the DfE’s Cyber Security Standards.

Our cloud‑hosted security services are designed specifically for education, providing robust protection, continuous monitoring and resilience against modern cyber threats, without the complexity of managing on‑site security hardware.

Having been awarded Best Security at the ISPA Awards, the industry’s most prestigious recognition, a record‑breaking six times, we believe this is independent recognition that we understand how to protect schools.

Whether you are reviewing your current provision or preparing for future DfE expectations, we can help you assess your position against the standards and put the right protections in place.

Cyber security has changed. We’re here to help schools change with it.
